This paper presents methodologies and dynamics with the aim of creating and promoting collective perspectives and actions on the territory, which were applied in a vulnerable zone of the district of Las Heras, Mendoza, Argentina. This initiative is part of the "Habitat" Program of the Holcim Argentina Foundation. Social mapping was used as a participatory urban research tool in which the inhabitants recognized significant places by writing their perceptions and proposals on a map of the area. Through an analysis of the phrases written on the map, the work explores the relationships established between people and environment, as well as specifies the systems of places where inhabitants develop their daily activities. The map allowed to identify the social occupation of the space, facilitating the collective interpretation of the problems of the intervened territory. Inserted in a process of urban acupuncture, not only did social mapping transcend its function of producing collective knowledge, but also it became a design tool incorporated in the design phase. At the same time, it allowed the recovery of a public space and demonstrated that it is possible to innovate and generate value through interactive processes among public, private, academic, and community representative entities in the framework of sustainable development.
